Varijala Gopala Krishna Temple, located at Gopalayapalli, is revered by devotees as a sacred hill shrine, comparable in spiritual significance to Yadagiri Gutta. This holy site is associated with a unique Sthalapurana (local legend) that has drawn deep devotion over generations. According to tradition, Lord Krishna, in His child form, once resided in a golden anthill atop the hill. A cow would visit the spot daily, continuously offering streams of milk to the divine presence. These miraculous events established the region as a revered Krishna kshetra. At the heart of the temple, Lord Varijala Venugopala Swamy, an enchanting form of Lord Krishna, blesses devotees along with Goddess Rukmini and Goddess Satyabhama. The processional deity is beautifully adorned with the sacred Tirunama. After daily pujas and aarti, priests bestow Satagopa blessings, along with teertham (holy water) and prasadam, filling devotees with spiritual fulfillment. The temple complex includes several important sub-shrines that enrich its Vaishnava heritage. A Garuda Alwar shrine stands prominently in front of the main sanctum. To the right of the sanctum sanctorum is the shrine of Andal Ammavaru, the only female among the twelve Alwars, while a separate shrine dedicated to the Alwars is located on the left. The entire temple premises resonate with Krishna bhajans and devotional hymns, creating a deeply calming and uplifting atmosphere. Festivals at this sacred hill temple are celebrated with grandeur and devotion. Kalyana Utsavams, Vahana Sevas, Gandadeepalankarana, and other annual celebrations are conducted with great splendor. Among them, the Sesha Vahana, Garuda Vahana, and Hanuman Vahana Sevas are major highlights. Daily nitya pujas and Sahasranama Archana are performed strictly according to scriptural traditions. Lord Hanuman is enshrined here as the Kshetrapalaka (guardian deity). Worshipped as Sri Rama’s messenger and the greatest of devotees, Hanuman appears in a striking vermilion (sindoor) form in front of the temple. Devotees firmly believe that his darshan dispels fear and grants courage, strength, and divine protection. Perched atop a scenic hill, the Varijala Gopala Krishna Temple is not only a place of worship but also a serene retreat for the mind and soul. The surroundings are peaceful, devotional, and ideal for quiet reflection after darshan. The best time to visit is during the early morning or evening hours. The temple also features a large Hanuman statue and a Koneru (sacred water tank) opposite the temple. In addition to Lord Krishna, there are sub-shrines dedicated to Lord Shiva, Lord Hanuman, and the Navagrahas, making this temple a spiritually complete pilgrimage destination.
