Ranchhodrai Temple

Ranchhodrai Temple is one of the most important Vaishnav pilgrimage centers in Gujarat and holds deep religious significance among devotees of Lord Krishna. The deity worshipped here is Lord Krishna in the form of Ranchhodrai, meaning “the one who left the battlefield,” referring to a divine episode from Krishna’s life. According to tradition, the idol in Dakor is believed to be the original idol from Dwarka, brought by the devotee Bodana. This belief makes the temple spiritually powerful and highly revered among followers.

The temple also plays a significant cultural and social role in Gujarat. It attracts lakhs of devotees every year, especially during Sharad Purnima and Janmashtami. Dakor has developed as a major religious town because of this temple, supporting local traditions, fairs, and devotional practices. The temple represents strong faith, devotion (bhakti), and the living heritage of Krishna worship in Gujarat, making it both a religious and historical landmark.

Ranchhodrai Temple in Dakor is one of the most important Krishna temples in Gujarat. The present structure was built in 1772 by Gopalrao Jagannath Tambwekar.

According to legend, Lord Krishna moved from Dwarka to Dakor to bless his devotee Bodana. The idol worshipped here is believed to be the original idol of Dwarka brought by Bodana.

The temple became a major Vaishnav pilgrimage center and is especially crowded during Purnima days.

The most important festival celebrated at Ranchhodrai Temple is Sharad Purnima, which attracts thousands of devotees from across Gujarat and other states. On this full moon night, the temple is beautifully decorated with lights and flowers, and special darshan arrangements are made throughout the day and night. Devotees take a holy dip in the Gomti Lake before visiting the temple. The idol of Lord Ranchhodrai is adorned with special ornaments and garments, and continuous bhajans and kirtans are performed in the temple premises.

Janmashtami, the birth anniversary of Lord Krishna, is celebrated with great devotion and grandeur. The temple organizes special aartis, midnight celebrations, devotional singing, and elaborate decorations. Other festivals like Holi, Diwali, Annakut (Govardhan Puja), and Kartik Purnima are also celebrated with special rituals, offering of sweets (bhog), and large gatherings of devotees. On these occasions, the temple witnesses heavy footfall and a vibrant spiritual atmosphere.
