The Sun Temple at Modhera is one of Gujarat’s most significant architectural and historical landmarks. It represents the peak of Solanki-era craftsmanship and temple design.

Its astronomical alignment, detailed carvings, and stepped tank make it an important study site for historians, architects, and archaeologists. It stands as a symbol of Gujarat’s medieval cultural excellence.

The Sun Temple at Modhera was built in 1026–1027 CE during the reign of King Bhima I of the Chaulukya (Solanki) dynasty. It is one of the finest examples of Solanki architecture in western India and was designed to honor Lord Surya, the Sun God. The temple complex is aligned in such a way that during the equinox, the first rays of the rising sun illuminated the sanctum.

The temple is no longer an active place of worship and is protected by the Archaeological Survey of India. The structure consists of a grand stepped tank (Surya Kund), an intricately carved Sabha Mandapa, and the main shrine. The detailed carvings depict scenes from the Ramayana, Mahabharata, and various aspects of daily life and celestial beings.

By Road: Modhera is about 25 km from Mehsana and well connected by state highways.

No regular daily pooja is conducted as the temple is a protected historical monument.

Occasional cultural programs and the Modhera Dance Festival are organized by the Gujarat government.

The Modhera Dance Festival (Uttarardh Mahotsav) is the most notable event organized annually at the Sun Temple complex. Classical dancers from across India perform against the illuminated backdrop of the temple, celebrating India’s cultural heritage.

Makar Sankranti is symbolically significant due to the temple’s solar alignment, although no traditional temple rituals are performed today as it is preserved as a monument.
