It is situated in Katarmal village near Almora at an elevation of approximately 2,116 metres. Uttarakhand Tourism describes the main temple as a 9th-century monument and states that the complex is associated with the Katyuri rulers.

The temple complex is built around a principal shrine dedicated to Surya and contains numerous smaller temples. Uttarakhand Tourism describes the complex as having around 45 temples. The site is protected as an important archaeological monument, and its stone construction, carved architectural elements and mountain setting reflect the religious and artistic traditions of medieval Kumaon.
Katarmal is especially significant because it is the only Sun temple identified by the Almora district administration as such in Kumaon. The temple's elevated location and its position amid forested hills add to its heritage value. Reaching the complex involves a walk from the road near Kosi, making the journey part of the experience for visitors.
Katarmal Sun Temple is one of the most significant ancient Surya temples in Uttarakhand and the principal historic Sun temple of the Kumaon region. Its main shrine, known as Bara Aditya, is dedicated to Surya, while the surrounding group of smaller temples makes the complex architecturally and religiously distinctive.
The temple is also important as a protected heritage monument associated with the medieval Katyuri period. Its approximately 2,116-metre elevation, forested surroundings, stone architecture and traditional approach trail make it an important pilgrimage, archaeological and cultural destination near Almora.

Road: Katarmal Sun Temple is approximately 17 km from Almora. The nearest road-connected town is Kosi. Visitors can travel by taxi or private vehicle towards Kosi and then undertake a trek of approximately 1.5 km from Kosi to the temple. The Almora district administration also describes the approach as involving a trek through the Hawalbagh and Matela area near the Kosi River.
Rail: Kathgodam is the nearest major railway station, approximately 90 km from Almora. From Kathgodam, visitors can travel by road to Almora/Kosi and continue to Katarmal.

रेल मार्ग: काठगोदाम निकटतम प्रमुख रेलवे स्टेशन है, जो अल्मोड़ा से लगभग 90 किमी दूर है। काठगोदाम से दर्शनार्थी सड़क मार्ग द्वारा अल्मोड़ा/कोसी जाकर कटारमल की ओर आगे बढ़ सकते हैं।
