Jageshwar is an ancient Shaiva temple complex in the Almora district of Uttarakhand, situated in the Jata Ganga valley. The complex contains more than 100 stone temples, with government sources counting approximately 124–125 shrines. According to the Archaeological Survey of India, the monuments belong to the post-Gupta and early medieval periods, with the complex generally regarded as being around 2,500 years old. Uttarakhand Tourism states that many of the temples were built or renovated under the Katyuri rulers. Numerous stone sculptures and more than 25 inscriptions have also been recorded in the complex.

Jageshwar's religious importance developed alongside its architectural history. The principal Jageshwar Mahadev shrine is dedicated to Lord Shiva in his younger form, while the wider complex contains several other Shaiva and associated shrines. The District Almora administration notes the long-standing religious importance of Jageshwar in Kumaon. The belief that Jageshwar represents one of the twelve Jyotirlingas is a religious tradition; it should be distinguished from the archaeological evidence concerning the temple complex.
The surrounding Jageshwar valley also has a long cultural association with the region's ruling dynasties and pilgrimage traditions. The temples stand along the Jata Ganga stream amid dense deodar forests, and the complex is protected as an archaeological heritage site. Its surviving temples, sculptures and inscriptions make Jageshwar both a major Shiva pilgrimage centre and an important monument of Himalayan temple architecture.
Jageshwar Mahadev is the principal Shiva shrine within the historically important Jageshwar temple group. The temple is also known as Tarun Jageshwar or Bal Jageshwar and is specifically dedicated to the younger form of Lord Shiva. Its setting in the Jata Ganga valley, surrounded by deodar, rhododendron and pine forests, is an important part of the site's cultural landscape.
The wider Jageshwar Dham is significant for its concentration of ancient stone temples, sculptures and inscriptions. Its post-Gupta and early-medieval architectural heritage, together with its continuing Shaiva pilgrimage tradition, makes it one of the most important religious and archaeological temple complexes in Kumaon.
