Omkareshwar stands on Mandhata island, also called Shivpuri, in the Narmada river near Khandwa. It is the fourth of the twelve Jyotirlingas. The Jyotirlinga is a rounded black stone, with a white stone for Parvati beside it.

Temple Historyमंदिर का इतिहासఆలయ చరిత్ర
The temple is said to have been built by the Paramara kings of Malwa in the eleventh century, after which it passed to the Chauhan rulers. It was looted and damaged during the medieval invasions, though never completely destroyed, and the Chauhans held it through the Mughal period with little restoration. The temple was rebuilt in the eighteenth century by the Holkar rulers: the work began under Gautama Bai Holkar and was completed by Ahilyabai Holkar, whose name is attached to the rebuilding of several Jyotirlinga shrines. After independence the Archaeological Survey of India took on its care together with the Khandwa administration.
