The temple stands on Rameswaram island in Ramanathapuram district and is the southernmost of the twelve Jyotirlingas. Shiva is worshipped here as Ramanathaswamy, with Parvathavardhini in her own shrine. Tradition holds that Rama established the lingam here. The temple is known for its corridors, the longest of any Hindu temple in India.

The temple was expanded under the Pandya dynasty in the twelfth century, and Parakramabahu I of Sri Lanka took part in building the sanctum. Malik Kafur raided Rameswaram in 1311. Between about 1380 and 1410 Jeyaveera Cinkaiariyan of the Jaffna kingdom renovated the sanctum with stone shipped from the Koneswaram temple. The Vijayanagara kings added Virabhadra composite columns in the early sixteenth century, and the Setupati rulers continued the work: Dalavai Setupati built part of the eastern gopuram in the seventeenth century, and Muthuramalinga Setupati, who ruled from 1763 to 1795, had the third corridor, the Chokkattan Mandapam, built. The outer corridor runs roughly 400 feet on the east and west and 640 feet north and south, about 3,850 feet in all, with some 1,212 pillars.
