Shila Devi Temple

Shila Devi Temple holds immense religious significance as a powerful Shakti Peetha-like shrine for devotees of Goddess Durga. It is especially revered by the local community and was historically the kuldevi (family deity) of the Kachwaha Rajput rulers of Jaipur. The temple represents strength, protection, and victory.

Apart from its spiritual importance, the temple is also culturally significant due to its location within Amber Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage site. It beautifully combines devotion with history, making it a must-visit destination for both pilgrims and tourists.

Shila Devi Temple is located inside the historic Amber Fort in Jaipur and holds deep religious and royal significance. The temple was established by Maharaja Man Singh I of the Kachwaha dynasty in the late 16th century. According to historical accounts, the idol of the goddess was brought from Bengal after a successful military campaign, symbolizing divine protection and victory granted to the king.

The name "Shila Devi" comes from the Sanskrit word "Shila," meaning stone, as the idol is believed to have been carved from a single stone slab. The temple quickly became the royal family's main place of worship, especially before undertaking important decisions or battles. Over time, it gained popularity among devotees visiting Amber Fort.

The temple architecture reflects traditional Rajput style, with intricate silver doors and detailed carvings depicting scenes from Hindu mythology. Despite being located within a tourist destination, the temple maintains its spiritual atmosphere and continues to attract thousands of devotees daily.

Historically, animal sacrifice was practiced during Navratri as part of royal traditions, though it has now been discontinued. The temple is beautifully decorated with lights and flowers, and the atmosphere becomes vibrant with devotional chants and cultural activities.
