Vishwanath Temple is an ancient Shiva temple situated in the heart of Uttarkashi, on the banks of the Bhagirathi River. The shrine is dedicated to Lord Shiva in the form of Vishwanath, meaning the Lord of the Universe. Uttarkashi itself is regarded as an important pilgrimage centre and its name is traditionally associated with Kashi because of the presence of the Vishwanath shrine and other sacred sites.

The present temple is traditionally associated with Queen Guh (or Guhya) of the Katyuri period, although different local historical accounts give varying details about its reconstruction and patronage. The temple has undergone repairs and changes over time while retaining its importance as an ancient centre of Shaiva worship.
A distinctive feature of the complex is the Shakti Temple, located close to the Vishwanath shrine and known for its large trident. The Vishwanath Temple is an important stop for pilgrims travelling towards Gangotri and other sacred destinations of Uttarakhand, and it continues to be one of the principal religious landmarks of Uttarkashi.
Vishwanath Temple is one of the most important Shiva temples of Uttarkashi and holds a central position in the religious life of the town. Lord Shiva is worshipped here as Vishwanath, and the shrine is traditionally regarded as the spiritual counterpart of the famous Vishwanath shrine of Kashi. Mahashivratri is the principal festival celebrated at Vishwanath Temple, Uttarkashi. The temple receives large numbers of devotees during this period, with special worship, Abhishek and prayers offered to Lord Shiva. The festival is particularly important because Vishwanath is the principal Shiva shrine of Uttarkashi.
Shravan month is another significant period for Shiva worship. Devotees visit the temple throughout the month to offer water, Bilva leaves and prayers to Lord Shiva. Local religious events and traditional processions may also be held during important occasions.
