Tungnath is an ancient Shiva shrine situated on Chandranath Parbat in Rudraprayag district at an elevation of about 3,680 metres. It is the third shrine of the Panch Kedar group and is traditionally associated with the arms of Lord Shiva. Uttarakhand Tourism identifies Tungnath as one of the highest Shiva temples in the world. The official sources consulted do not establish a precise historical construction date or conclusively identify an individual founder of the present temple.

According to Hindu tradition, the Pandavas sought Lord Shiva after the Kurukshetra war. The legend says that Shiva assumed the form of a buffalo and subsequently manifested at five Himalayan locations, with his arms appearing at Tungnath. Uttarakhand Tourism also records the tradition that Ravana prayed to Lord Shiva at the nearby Ravana Rock. These accounts are religious traditions rather than independently established historical facts.
Tungnath has a seasonal religious cycle because of its high-altitude location and winter snowfall. The Badarinath-Kedarnath Temple Committee records that the winter worship of Tungnath is performed at Makkumath. This allows the worship tradition to continue when the main shrine is inaccessible during the winter season.
Tungnath is one of the five Panch Kedar temples and is traditionally regarded as the place where Lord Shiva's arms appeared. At approximately 3,680 metres, it is the highest temple among the Panch Kedar shrines and is recognised by Uttarakhand Tourism as one of the world's highest Shiva temples.
Its importance is also connected with its location on Chandranath Parbat and its role in the Chopta–Tungnath–Chandrashila pilgrimage and trekking route. The continuation of Tungnath worship at Makkumath during winter further distinguishes its seasonal religious tradition.
